Build a query from fields and a syllable template; results come from every layer at once.
— Fill in a field to search.
Type a word, or part of one, and it is looked for in the headwords and in the glosses. To narrow the search, add a term of the form field:value — pos:n keeps only nouns, dialect:沙流 only the Saru dialect. Several terms together must all hold.
This works in the site search (⌘K), on this page, and in the filter boxes of the morpheme and lexeme lists. Each list answers only the fields it has (table at the bottom).
| Looking for | Type |
|---|---|
| anything with sik in the word or in its gloss | |
| sik in the word itself, ignoring glosses | |
| words beginning with sik- | |
| words ending in -ray | |
| the whole phrase go out in a gloss | |
| die as a word of its own in a gloss (not diet, not died) | |
| nouns whose gloss contains 目 | |
| one-syllable CVC verbs, like pon | |
| words whose last syllable ends in a consonant | |
| words of three syllables or more | |
| lexemes recorded in the Saru dialect | |
| affixes that have been verified | |
| entries whose source is 中川 | |
| words that contain the morpheme kar | |
| entries with a reconstruction by SRPA |
| Field | Looks in |
|---|---|
| lemma: | the word itself, its other forms and spellings (for lexemes also the kana) |
| gloss: | the English and Japanese glosses |
| shape: | the syllable pattern of the whole word (see below) |
| syl: | the number of syllables: 2 means exactly two, 2+ two or more |
| pos: | the part of speech, by its code: vi, vt, n, pfx … |
| dialect: | the dialect |
| kind: | what the entry is: root, affix, word, form or provisional |
| verified: | yes or no |
| source: | the source |
| morph: | the morphemes the word is made of, by id |
| proto: | reconstructed forms, or who proposed them (asterisks don't matter) |
Put the text between slashes and use ^ for "begins with" and $ for "ends with": lemma:/^si/ finds words beginning with si-, lemma:/ray$/ words ending in -ray. Capitals and small letters count the same. Anything a regular expression can do works here too, such as /\bdie\b/ for die as a whole word. On the list pages, ticking Regex does the same for what you type without the slashes — but it then looks in glosses as well, so to search the word alone write lemma:/…/.
Describe the word syllable by syllable: C is any consonant, V any vowel, N a nasal (m, n), T a stop (p, t, k), G a glide (w, y); a small letter is that sound itself. A dot separates syllables and * stands for any number of them, so sikirpa is si.kir.pa. The pattern has to cover the whole word: CVC finds one-syllable words like pon, *.CVC words whose last syllable ends in a consonant, [ptk]VN one-syllable words that begin with p, t or k and end in m or n.
