日高 ひだか Hidaka
Hidaka region, Hokkaidō
A Japanese name. It was given when the provinces of Ezo were named, and passed to the modern towns of Hidaka and Shin-Hidaka when villages of the region merged.

Matsuura Takeshirō proposed the province name, taking it from Hitakami-no-kuni, the eastern country of the Nihon Shoki, whose entry for the twenty-seventh year of Keikō has Takeuchi no Sukune report an eastern country of tattooed and valiant people, all called Emishi. Where Hitakami-no-kuni lay is unsettled, whether Hitachi province or the Kitakami river country at Ishinomaki; in either case it names a country toward the sunrise, east of Yamato. Matsuura named the country of the northern Ainu, the Moshirpakur, Kitami on the same pattern.
