The reading behind the 1947 restoration, which the book calls widespread and finds in Акулов 2005 too; the book also quotes Ю. В. Кнорозов for an итурап 'strawberry-like berry'.
etor is 'snot, mucus' in Hokkaidō Ainu and etoropo is not a dictionary word the record can check; the name's history from de Vries's Staten Island to 択捉 gives the reading no support.

In chief ヤコーフ's division of the chain the island belongs to Yawani, the southern group with 北海道. Torii questioned an old 蝦夷アイヌ woman at 留別 on this island, who called the northern chain Chup'ka (p. 36).
