The reading holds for the form Kūkarushinai. Matsuura writes 「此辺山に成るよし」 of the place, and the article reads the name as a valley on the ridge running from Shikaribetsu Maruyama, allowing that the same name may stand on both the Nutchi and the Yoichi.
ku 'bow', kar, us and nay are all Tamura headwords in the senses used and the shape is grammatical. The spelling in Matsuura's lists is クツカルシナイ, and the reading holds only if the Kūkarushinai of the 高橋蝦夷図 is the same name.

Given as river names around the Makununai in Ōe. Uehara Kumajirō gives the mountain road of the Bunka years as four ri from Shimo-Yoichi to Panke-gukarushinai, two and a half further to Rubeshinai, and one more to Rūchishi, the Inaho pass.
