Akulov reads the name from the island's position behind Onekotan; the book also reports Добротворский's makan 'go upriver' and Batchelor's makan + rush 'skins' through Браславец 1983.

Confidence: low

The segmentation fits the modern form but not the older Кукумива, and Torii's informants gave no meaning.

    又一名を Kokumetra と云ふ、この島、古は無かりしがオン子コタン島の Pii-moi-tō 沼より Katruokuru なる神、手にて拔き取り此島に投げ出したるものなりと云ふ、この神がかくなせしは、最初この沼に夥多しく鳥獸の寄り集まり來りやかましかりし故なりと

    Torii gives a second name Kokumetra and the tale that the island did not exist of old: the god Katruokuru pulled it out of the lake Pii-moi-tō on Onekotan and threw it here, because the birds and beasts crowding that lake made too much noise. No etymology is offered.

    The eighteenth-century Russian record calls the island Кукумиша пятой (Козыревский 1725), Кукумива (1726–1737), Кукумиша, Кукумива, Маканрураси (Крашенинников 1755); the form Макан-рур-асы enters with Иван Черный's diary of 1769 and the 1788 lexicon, and Полонский 1871 has Макандруръ, Маканъ руръ асы.
