The 1947 commission restored the name as the Russian pronunciation of Шимошири 'large island', and the 1985 handbook and Браславец 1983 (after Добротворский: ши 'large' + мосири 'island') read it the same way (Бражник–Пономарёв 2024, p. 358).
si-mosir fits this island's name; Batchelor's head also covers Shumshu, which Torii's informants call Shumushu, with no si.

In chief ヤコーフ's division of the chain the island belongs to 西 Rūton, the Kuril Ainu's own land. Torii's informants' own knowledge of the chain ended here in the south (pp. 40–41).
