Analyses

Urup-pet

ウルップペッ ‘red salmon river’ proposed
  • urup ‘red salmon (Batchelor)’
  • pet ‘river’

Proponent: Batchelor, John (John Batchelor)

Batchelor's reading, which supplies a pet the recorded island name does not show.

Confidence: low

Krasheninnikov's Уруп and Torii's ウルツプ carry no pet, and urup 'red salmon' is Batchelor's own gloss.

Batchelor1905 § V "Place Names Considered", s.v. Uruppu

Уруппу

ウルップ ‘the salmon island’ proposed
  • uruppu ‘a salmon (Okamoto: 紅鱒 beni-masu; the book: coho)’

Proponent: 岡本柳之助 (Okamoto Ryūnosuke)

The reading the 1947 commission adopted as 'salmon'; Иван Черный's diary of 1769 already glosses the name by the red fish of the island's lake Топо, and Siebold's Vries glossary has Urupp as Salmo sanguinolentus.

Confidence: medium

A fish name urup for the island is recorded independently in 1769 and 1898; which salmon it is remains open, and Batchelor's urup-pet adds a pet the name never shows.

Бражник2024 p. 366, quoting Позднеев 1909, с. 182, after 岡本柳之助 1898
