Chiri proposes riya ‘having wintered’ + -nka, from Nivkh ŋa ‘animal’, and reports that Nivkh and Uilta use the same name (§278(15)). Tangiku (2018), slide 13 compares Ainu riyanka / ciyanka with Nivkh teaŋa and Uilta ceeŋa. The latter are the forms actually printed in Tangiku’s table. This record marks a proposed contact relationship; the direction of borrowing and Chiri’s internal analysis remain uncertain. Yamada (2013:31–32) reproduces Austerlitz’s (1968:135) comparison of Uilta ceeŋa, Nivkh the-ŋa, and Ainu ciyanka. She reports his tentative view that Uilta supplied many seal terms, subject to comparison with other Tungusic languages. This is a general proposal about the vocabulary set; it does not establish the direction for riyanka.
